Remote Profile: Laura Pounds

LAURA POUNDS

CHARTER SALES & CLIENT RELATIONS IN PRIVATE AVIATION

USA

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME ON REMOTE YEAR?

The moment I saw a marketing video for Remote Year on Facebook, I had the chills and for the first time in a while I had that feeling when you know something is right for you and you have direction. I was in a transitional time in my life and it came at the most perfect time, as things often do. I have always gravitated towards any type of travel and the combination of travel, hard work, learning and a sense of community compelled me to apply. A force I can't quite explain in words guided me to be here, it just felt "right."

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON FOR THE YEAR?

I work full time for a private aviation company in sales and client relations.  I have been able to continue a strong and effective work ethic working remotely in different countries which was important for me. The time difference has actually aided me in my field as I have been able to network more with European offices. On a personal level my number one goal is self care and balance and this is something that can be a challenge for many, especially when traveling. But health, learning and personal growth are incredibly important to me and if I can make time for those items in my life then I know all good things will follow both professionally and personally.

WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED/TRAVELED TO PREVIOUSLY?

Would be a longer list of the places I have lived but I have lived both on the east coast, west coast, midwest, the south and northwest.  I prefer the warmer regions to live and I prefer anywhere to travel.

HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF A REMOTE ROLE?

I worked in office full time in Los Angeles for my company for 4 years and worked remotely for 2 years when I had to move to North Carolina so working remotely was something that was already a part of my life style and did not take much adjustment.  I was lucky to have such great support from my boss on both the program and knowing my work ethic that this experience would be beneficial to both.  It has been a smooth transition and proves that remote workers and company support for remote workers is on the rise.

DESCRIBE YOUR REMOTE YEAR EXPERIENCE IN 3 WORDS.

Committed, Challenging and inspiring.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL COME FROM?

Born with it and has always been within me.  Only my little sister and I share that strong passion in my family.  I have always thrived on change and I have moved around my whole life mostly on my own as an adult. It's just a force within me and I love seeing and experiencing new things and learning along the way. I have never been able to stay in one place for long and in the US I would take at least one weekend road trip per month.

WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

Working remotely has not changed my average work day much. Developing a daily morning routine and structure is incredibly important to me especially when we can be pulled in so many different directions. I wake up at 6:00 AM and take “me time.” I make my coffee and listen to podcasts while checking my emails and making my “to do lists” for the day, I work out and take a run just as I have always done and then I go to work and do my best to always do my best.

HOW DO YOU THINK TRAVELLING WILL AFFECT YOUR CURRENT WORK?

I hope it only affects it in a positive way.  So far so good and that has only been the case. I am more patient, I have learned about new programs to stay more organized both professionally and personally and I have gained more confidence. My job can be demanding at times so I miss out on some events but I’m lucky that I do not experience much “FOMO” at this point. I think I have found a great balance in saying “yes” to events that are truly important to me within the community and I am ok saying “no” to others. I am committed to both my career and life and travel has only impacted them both in a positive way.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?

A lot, but currently: Obtaining a healthy lifestyle and personal growth.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.

A day that feels accomplished and begins with a cup of coffee on a balcony,  and ends with a glass of wine on a balcony. Throw in a little boating and horseback riding and I’m set.

YOUR FAVORITE DIGITAL NOMAD HACK?

It's not a digital hack persay but an important travel hack for me. Starbucks instant coffee packets. =)  I did not realize a pot of coffee would not always be easily accessible and I struggle bad to begin my day without coffee first thing.  Carrying those little packets on road trips, camping, Machu Picchu, etc has brought a part of my morning routine on the road and when I share with others they are always grateful for the preparation.

WHO DO YOU HOPE TO BE BY THE END OF REMOTE YEAR?

I want to be me, but maybe a better version of myself who has a more clear direction of where I want to be and what truly fulfills me and makes me happy.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD?

Learning when to walk away from the computer and take a rest or move and shut down for the day. When your computer is always easily accessible it can be hard to shut down for the day and take “you time.”

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD?

Living and knowing this lifestyle for those who want it, is both beneficial to companies and the employee and being a part of a growing work industry. I believe I am more present and focused as a person and employee working as a digital nomad.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHERS LOOKING TO BRING TRAVEL INTO THEIR LIVES?

Don't just talk about it but turn words into actions.  Without actions, words do not mean too much.  Take a risk, take a leap of faith and stay patient. Travel can include domestic, international and small weekend trips.  It does not always have to start out as some grand exploration across the globe and there is so much to see even 2 hours from one's house typically.  Confidence = Action.

3 THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT ON THE ROAD?

Music, starbucks instant coffee, my stuffed animal dog who looks like my pup “Autumn” who is waiting for my return.

IF YOU HAD TO BE STUCK ON AN ISLAND WITH ANOTHER REMOTE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Definitely “Willy” the pup we adopted at the workspace WIP in Croatia.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TALENT?

I make a mean cocktail and like mixology. I also train dogs.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE ON THE GLOBE?

Anywhere where I am hiking with my dog and in nature

WHERE ARE YOU IN 30 YEARS?

Retired and traveling I hope
