CO-FOUNDER, ALPHABET SHIRTS / CO-FOUNDER, HUBSCOPE
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME ON REMOTE YEAR?
I needed to escape the gravitational pull of old habits and routines so that I could reach escape velocity and embark upon new adventures. For me, it's as much about the internal journey, as an external one. Whoever said, "wherever you go, there you are" is wrong. New experiences and relationships lead to new thought patterns and then a shift in mindset.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON FOR THE YEAR?
I've been working on a number of different projects. Recently I just launched a new t-shirt business called Alphabet Shirts. Our mission is to make gifts more personal - one t-shirt at a time.
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF A REMOTE ROLE?
I created it rather than found it through negotiations with business partners and investing in self-development by using my savings.
WHO DO YOU HOPE TO BE BY THE END OF REMOTE YEAR?
I hope to be having fun and generating a sustainable remote income, so that where I choose to live is not constrained by work considerations
WHAT BOOK SHOULD EVERYONE READ?
Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach
WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
Cliche, but there is no typical day. This morning I was pulling together a bid for a large government project in New Zealand and discussing it with my business partner in NZ. This afternoon I was doing some design work for a t-shirt order and chatting on slack with my business partner in England. This evening I'm meeting up with some pals and we're going in search of a good steak.
WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED/TRAVELED TO PREVIOUSLY?
I'm from the UK and have lived in Holland, Poland, Thailand, Finland, Japan and New Zealand. Now, I'm not quite where to call home.
WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL COME FROM?
For me living somewhere is different to travel. If you live somewhere for a month you get a better feel for a place and you start to fit in and belong. So, it's more a passion for connecting with this diverse and incredible world we live in.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHERS LOOKING TO BRING TRAVEL INTO THEIR LIVES?
Think about it as an investment in yourself. Traveling for a year is not just about fun, it's about exploring, learning and growing.
HOW DO YOU THINK TRAVELLING WILL AFFECT YOUR CURRENT WORK?
It's filling me with ideas and inspiration and new skills (from all the super talented people I'm traveling with who are more than happy to help out and answer questions.)
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD?
The lack of a constant routine.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TALENT?
Asking hard questions that lead to deep conversations
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DIGITAL NOMAD HACK?
I have 3 extra brains - evernote for information, omnifocus for actions and moleskine for creative thinking.
YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE/WORDS TO LIVE BY?
Recently, Mario Andretti, "If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough"
