Remote Profile: Annie Kingston

ANNIE KINGSTON

FREELANCE WRITER AND CONTENT CREATOR // CATCH ME IF YOU CANNIE

CANADA

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COME ON REMOTE YEAR?

Because "so many of us choose our path out of fear, disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I'm the proof - that you can ask the universe for it." - Jim Carey

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON FOR THE YEAR?

Becoming 100% remote and location independent. Never again do I want to go to a job interview for a role I know I don’t want.

WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED/TRAVELED TO PREVIOUSLY?

I’ve lived in Canada, Australia, Thailand and Dubai and I count myself lucky to have travelled to 57 countries and counting -  many of them when I worked as a flight attendant for Emirates Airline.

HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF A REMOTE ROLE?

I found one of my current freelance writing jobs through a lovely girl that I met in a hostel - for one night, seven years ago, on the other side of the world. I haven’t seen her since, which is just proof of what a powerful resource Facebook can be.

DESCRIBE YOUR REMOTE YEAR EXPERIENCE IN 3 WORDS.

The next chapter.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL COME FROM?

My grandma, my father, my four siblings and my curious heart.

WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

Wake up, wander to a new or old favourite neighbourhood. Drink coffee, write, read, edit an unreasonable amount of times, write, write more, wine.

HOW DO YOU THINK TRAVELLING WILL AFFECT YOUR CURRENT WORK?

Since I’m a travel writer,  inspiration is everywhere!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?

Words and stories, colours and clouds.

WHO DO YOU HOPE TO BE BY THE END OF REMOTE YEAR?

The best version of myself, so far.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD?

Knowing when to throw in the towel and not saying yes to everything. Also, group chats / Slack.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE ON THE GLOBE?

Bangkok, Thailand / Cape Town, South Africa / Vancouver, Canada

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD?

Booking one way plane/train/bus tickets.

YOUR FAVORITE DIGITAL NOMAD HACK?

Can UBER! Be considered a hack?  (I come from Vancouver, the land of no Uber. Which is really lame considering it’s one of the most innovative and technology-driven cities in Canada.)

WHAT BOOK SHOULD EVERYONE READ?

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak // The Cellist of Sarajevo by Stephen Galloway

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHERS LOOKING TO BRING TRAVEL INTO THEIR LIVES?

If you're interested in travelling, then there's never a good enough reason not to do it.

3 THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT ON THE ROAD?

Iphone, salt and vinegar chips (I always find them, eventually) and a good book/notebook.

WHERE ARE YOU IN 30 YEARS?

A published author whose given a TED talk or two.

YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE/WORDS TO LIVE BY?

Hold your own, know your name, go your own way.
