Wanderlust travel

There are parts of the remote work and travel lifestyle that you love and others… not so much.

The truth is, getting the opportunity to work from dreamy coworking spaces around the world while exploring local cultures and hotspots in your free time requires a bit of legwork.

One of the time-consuming, yet necessary, tasks associated with this way of life is finding affordable and efficient flights to the places you want to visit. There are hundreds of websites and apps that want your business, but the sheer number of options can be overwhelming.

How do you know you’re actually getting the best price? What if there’s another site out there that has a better deal, but you just haven’t found it yet? Do you really need to suffer through a 12-hour layover to get to your final destination for a reasonable price?

The good news: there’s an easy way to avoid a lot of the headache associated with booking flights. If you’re traveling with a remote work and travel program that is an accredited travel agency, you get access to their team of travel experts while on a program.

For example, in addition to having all of your travel between destinations planned for you from start to finish, Remote Year’s travel team will  help you book your transportation for any side trips that you’re interested in, saving you time and money.

However, we know that there’s life before - and after Remote Year - as a remote employee. Here are some tools you can use to get the best deals without wasting your time and energy:

Best Flight Aggregators for Remote Workers

Dollar Flight Club

The one that’s delivered right to your inbox

This site is one of our favorite travel hacks. Dollar Flight Club allows you to input your dream destinations and departure airports, then drops an email and/or text when relevant flights are being deeply discounted. Travelers save an average of $500 USD on international flights that they never would have found were it not for Dollar Flight Club. Hello $350 round trip to Australia from the US! The best part about this one is that you set it up once and you’re covered. You don’t have to schedule “Search for Flights” into your calendar anymore.

Momondo

The one that compares *everything*

Consider this your one-stop shop for all of your travel transportation needs. Momondo lets you compare flights from hundreds of airlines so that you can get to where you’re going for the lowest rate. It presents the best options for you at the top of the screen so you don’t have to do any deep digging, and lets you know what the best departure and arrival days are by affordability. Momondo is concerned with getting you the best price possible, though you can filter available options by take-off and landing times, duration and which booking sites you’d like to use.

Google Flights

The one built into your favorite search engine

Is there anything simpler than heading to Google to search for a flight? You don’t have to leave the search results page to look through the top options as far as price and quality - Google’s fancy flight finder widget keeps all of the information in one place. If you want to get a bit more detailed, you can view the Google Flights  page to see how airfares for your particular itinerary rise and fall over time, check out how flying into a different airport could change your price, and get a quick glimpse at what your destination offers as far as cultural attractions.

Hipmunk

The one that knows your time is as valuable as your money

Hipmunk does the things that other flight aggregators do. It rounds up the best flights for you based on price. However, it also has a special power: ranking flight based on agony. The way that Hipmunk defines “agony” is through a combination of price, number of stops, and duration. So, if you were headed to Japan and the flight was not only expensive, but also required you to endure multiple layovers in between long flights, the “agony” score would be high. However, if you were headed to London from the U.S. and you were able to get a nonstop flight at a good price, the “agony” score would be lower. When it comes to traveling, we all know that time spent is just as important as money spent - Hipmunk just makes that concept a little clearer when you’re booking.

Adioso

The one for flexible travelers

As a remote worker, you can work from pretty much anywhere, at any time. With a schedule as flexible as yours, Adioso is a great tool to have in your arsenal. This flight aggregator lets you be as specific, or as vague, as you’d like to when it comes to the duration of your trip. Let’s say that you want to go to Marrakesh someday. You can head to Adioso and input  Marrakesh and select “anytime” as your desired arrival and departure date. If you want to get a bit more specific, you can select a month that you’d like to visit (without indicating specific dates) and get a notification when prices will be the lowest during that time.

Whether you’re a remote worker who travels from time to time or a full-time nomad, using these flight aggregators will help you cut down time spent planning your trip, and give you more time to actually experience it.
