Learn Spanish and immerse yourself in Latin American culture as you spend 4 months exploring Antigua (Guatemala), Mexico City (Mexico), Medellin (Colombia), and Lima (Peru). Enhance your Spanish skills through classes and workshops while you discover captivating cities and colorful local traditions. Whether you are a beginner or nearly fluent, our Cruz program is designed to accommodate everyone and their respective Spanish learning journeys.
Our program is named after Celia Cruz, the "queen of salsa", who challenged racism and sexism and brought Afro-Cuban music to the world stage as a black woman. We hope that Cruz’s spirit of creativity inspires you as you join the Remote Year community and improve your Spanish during this exciting international adventure filled with growth, learning, and discovery.
On our Cruz Learn & Travel program, you will enhance your Spanish skills while also having the time to pursue professional goals and explore Latin America.
To ensure an optimized learning experience, you will be placed with fellow learners according to your level, and you will be able to customize the level of fluency you would like to commit to.
On this Learn & Travel program, you can expect:
*Add-on language packages are available at an additional cost
On this 4-month learning journey, you will dive into Latin American culture as you practice Spanish and discover both the highlights and the hidden gems of Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru. Extend your Spanish knowledge beyond the classroom as you engage with locals and discover the unique words, phrases, and expressions that you’d only learn en las calles (on the streets).
Your Cruz Learn & Travel journey begins in Antigua, Guatemala. Framed by impressive volcanoes and majestic mountains, Antigua is home to beautifully preserved colonial architecture. Admire pastel facades as you dar un paseo (take a walk) along cobblestone streets, pop into a restaurant to sample boquitas (Guatemalan small plates), or slip out of the city to hike near Lake Atitlan.
Continue the adventure and discover ¿Qué onda? (what’s up) in Mexico City. Use Spanish skills as you search for the best tacos in town or train with a professional luchador on a private Lucha Libre experience. This cultural center will delight art enthusiasts, food lovers, and adventurers alike.
Next, you will travel to Medellin, Colombia, a bustling city with a colorful past, situated in the Aburrá Valley. Surrounded by lush mountains, spend your days sipping locally-grown aromatic coffee, discovering the city’s history through street art in Comuna 13, or chatting in Spanish at the home of our local guide Rafa before exploring the colorful lakeside town of Guatapé. You’ll find that this city is cheverísimo (very cool).
Your final destination is Lima, Peru, a coastal city and culinary hot spot that offers stunning panoramic cliffside views of the Pacific. Wander the city’s historic colonial streets, admire bohemian street art in Barranco, or sample fresh ceviche as you sip un par de chelas (a couple of beers) after an afternoon surf session at Punta Roquitas.
You will be staying in comfortable private bedrooms in a mix of 2-3 bedroom apartments or houses as well as hotels. In some destinations, you may even be staying in a private, one-bed hotel room.
